Sheffield Children’s Hospital X-Ray Room Transformation
At the end of last year we completed work on a project that we were very proud to be a part of.
We were contracted by our client Agfa HealthCare to assist with the creation of a new x-ray room at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. This wasn’t just any x-ray room; this was to be an x-ray room with added X Factor!
The new suite by Agfa is absolutely state of the art, with the digital x-ray system giving faster results and making the entire process more efficient. The aim of the project was to turn the suite into a calming, sensory experience that would help to calm young patients whilst providing them with the best possible care. The concept was to use wall art, lighting and sound effects to transform the room into a magical forest.
To start with, we visited the installation site at the hospital to get a better understanding of the site and what they wanted to achieve for the children. We then came up with the initial concept theme and worked with the Children’s Hospital Charity for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Artfelt, who commissioned illustrator Tatiana Boyko and oversaw the final designs. Tatiana created the forest themed artwork which was complemented by a lighting and sound system donated by Agfa HealthCare.
We then installed the innovative lighting and sound system, which is controlled via an iPad from which the young patients can select their favourite room colour and animals, so that the room is personalised for them. This way they could have a level of control over an unpleasant experience and ease their anxiety of being in a strange medical environment when they are feeling vulnerable.
We created the LED lighting scheme to provide changeable wall washes depending on the child’s request and created a child friendly soundtrack to relate to woodland animals within the artwork with woodland character iPad icons to match with the sounds.
